These
memories are ones recalled by the villagers of Llanhennock,
a small hamlet high on the hill above the River Usk a few
miles from the Roman town of Caerleon.
Llanhennock
has been home to some famous families, the best known were
the Mackworths whose ancestry dates to the reign of Henry
VII.
Residents
will tell this story past and present, some who were born
here, others who have seen sixty years or more pass since
first being introduced to this green and special place.
All
those we spoke to looked back with nostalgia and were more
than happy to share with us their memories.
The
heart of their world were the people, and as in any village
this is still the case.
We
have been privileged to talk to many people who have delighted
us with their stories, we hope you will be as enchanted
with them as we have been.
I
am indebted to:
- Ron Smith who has wielded the microphone with skill enabling
the friends and residents to tell their stories, and who
has been invaluable in taking and copying the photographs;
- Bill Hoskins who as the oldest resident kindly gave his
time and whose story got me interested in this project to
begin with; and
- John and Doreen Trickey for their interest in this project,
for providing photographs and introductions to other people
and for their patience in waiting for this to emerge in
a format everyone has access to.
There
are others, too, who have given their time and energy in
response to my letters - and everyone will be acknowledged
as the story unfolds.
